Smadar Khan Winery & Boutique Hotel

Smadar is a small family-run boutique winery in the heart of Zichron Yaakov, founded in 1998 by Moty Shapira, a fourth-generation winegrower from one of the colony's founding families. According to the winery's own site, it sits in the courtyard of a historic family farm (the official site describes an roughly 140-year-old farm courtyard; secondary sources cite a stone house built in 1890). The Shapira family has farmed the local vineyards for generations. The wines are aged reds made from grapes of the cool Ein Tut valley on the northern slopes of Zichron Yaakov, matured in French oak barrels. The official site does not name specific flagship labels or grape varieties — regional reds typically include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Carignan and Petit Verdot, but Smadar's exact varieties are not confirmed in published sources. Notably, the winery is not kosher and is open on Saturday, which sets it apart from most kosher wineries in the area. The visitor offering is modest and by appointment only: wine can be bought and tasted at the winery, with a shop presence on the main pedestrian street. The site also runs Smadar Inn, an adults-only boutique hotel with 4 rustic luxury suites, a heated indoor pool, dry sauna, gym and a full Israeli breakfast; each suite includes a bottle of the family's aged wine. There is no restaurant, formal tour or workshop program — the format suits couples and adults.
