Amphorae Winery
CarmelAmphorae Winery was founded in 2000 at Makura Farm near the village of Kerem Maharal, on the western slopes of the Carmel. It is housed in a striking Tuscan-style stone building at the entrance to a valley — one of Israel's most scenic wineries. Amphorae makes mainly red wines from Bordeaux and Mediterranean varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Petite Sirah — with an emphasis on terroir, minimal intervention and ecological practices; the winery has at times been advised by consultant Michel Rolland. The visitor center offers a tour of the winery and cellar with a tasting of four wines and a cold board (cheeses, fruit, nuts and fresh bread). Visits are best arranged in advance.
