The daughters tell them about the price they paid, and about the shame and pain passed on to them even through the silences, and how this affected their lives and their will to succeed and to change. Across the three episodes, their stories are accompanied by family archival material and a critical, historical and social perspective, telling the story of the Mizrahi feminist struggle for equality and social justice. Two episodes will be screened, followed by a conversation with directors Keren Shayo and Efrat Shalom Danon and producer Osnat Trabelsi. Episode 1 - Mother Tongue The first episode tells the story of second- and third-generation daughters of immigrants from Arab countries, who carry with them the pain and oppression absorbed from their mothers. On encountering the dominant culture, they begin to feel shame and a sense of not belonging, and in order to be accepted they change and distance themselves from home and from their identity. It is precisely after they manage to get in that they realize what they lost along the way, the price they paid, and they begin a journey of returning to accept their mother, their family, and their Mizrahi identity. 52 minutes, Hebrew, Hebrew subtitles. Episode 2 - My Heart's Cry The second episode tells the story of the mothers, the first generation of immigrants. The mothers, who carried with them the pain of immigration and loss, faced double oppression as women and as Mizrahi women. In conversations with their daughters, they tell, sometimes for the first time, what they carried for years in silence.
