# Exhibition: Crossing the Lines – From Line to Thread

> Haifa Events

**Category:** exhibition

## Description

The common thread running between the artists featured in the exhibition is each one's particular attraction to the act of drawing lines and its central place in their work. Lines play an important role in all cultures, since they contribute to the understanding, interpretation, and representation of reality. Human beings, regardless of their connection to art, produce lines, consciously and unconsciously. As walking, talking creatures who use hand gestures, humans create lines in space and time everywhere, without pause. A line can be physical, like a thread, or non-physical — geometric or imaginary — like lines of longitude and latitude and the horizon line. A line can be a sequence of points, a product of thought, or an element tied to physical action — calligraphy and dance, for example.

Elements of lines, traces, and threads run like a common thread between the works on display in the exhibition, weaving a layered fabric of meanings. The exhibition is divided according to metaphors of lines and threads — the timeline, the horizon line, line, thread and identity, the line of a story, the thread of memory, lines of separation and erasure, body lines, and the lifeline. Throughout the exhibition, the central idea of a dialogue between line and thread is maintained — the line separates from its surface and becomes a thread, and the thread applied to a surface becomes a line; thread is represented through line, and line is represented through thread.
