The two operas are frequently performed in a single evening, as they are stylistically alike and each runs about an hour, divided into two parts by an instrumental intermezzo. Both belong to the verismo genre, which portrays life without embellishment, just as it is, conveying the deepest human emotions and passions through the language of music and drama. In both operas the music is not merely a backdrop — it is both narrator and participant in the story itself, heightening the intensity of the passions while wrapping them in an aesthetic shell.
