Opus 17: The International Festival of Culture and Arts Films. Gustav Mahler arrives in New York in 1907, a refugee from antisemitism and personal crisis, seeking to find a new spiritual home there. For a time he conducts the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic, and also composes his last two symphonies there. But the Austrian-Jewish composer's four years in the city are gloomy ones, revealed in depth in the film through letters he wrote to friends and others written by his wife Alma. Throughout the film, Mahler's magnificent music plays, from the symphonies to songs he wrote for Alma, and against this backdrop we discover that he lost his job after conductor Arturo Toscanini arrived in New York, that he struggled with an illness that ravaged his body, and that he suffered severe emotional pain in his relationship with his brilliant and ambitious wife, who betrayed him. Four years after arriving in New York, Mahler asked to return to his city, Vienna. There he died in 1911 and was buried, at his request, beside his daughter who died in childhood. 93 minutes, English, Hebrew subtitles. The screening and synopsis are courtesy of the Opus Festival.
