Composers have repeatedly turned to them, drawn inspiration from them, and seen in them an expression of national identity and shared memory. They arranged them, recomposed them, and carried them from the street, the home, and the community onto the written score and the concert stage. The program traces the transformations of familiar melodies from different periods and places: a Spanish romance by Alonso Mudarra and in the Ladino tradition, reinterpreted by composer Yonatan Keren (Israel–Switzerland); Scottish and Irish songs arranged by Beethoven; the Beatles' 'Yesterday' arranged by Luciano Berio; and Bach chorales based on a folk song, alongside folk songs, dances, and traditional tunes that have received new interpretations throughout history.
