'Mariupol Drama' — play in Ukrainian with Russian subtitles
Duration: 1 hour 20 minutes. Age 12+. Performance in Ukrainian with Russian subtitles. Donetsk Regional Academic Drama Theatre (Mariupol) — "Theatre Without a Roof". "Drama in Mariupol". This event is considered one of the most tragic war crimes: on March 6, 2022, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Donetsk Regional Academic Drama Theatre building in Mariupol suffered a devastating air strike, killing hundreds of innocent people. Even two enormous "CHILDREN" signs on both sides of the building did not stop the enemy from committing this terrible, cynical crime. The play "Drama in Mariupol" is a theatrical project created by actors who survived the bombed Mariupol theatre. It represents a powerful testimony to the tragic events in Ukraine in February–March 2022. There is no fiction here — only real reality. The Mariupol actors, eyewitnesses to the events themselves, come onto the stage and portray not fictional characters but themselves. During the siege, they were inside the theatre building and, together with the audience, experienced all the horrors of the besieged city. The play's characters are introduced to the audience, and the action begins, united by a chain of intense events in which the audience itself becomes a participant as the action unfolds. The production uses the actors' personal belongings, which they managed to bring out of their shelter, as well as video and photographs filmed during the siege. The play was written by Ukrainian author and playwright Oleksandr Havrosh based on collected testimonies. It was staged at the Mariupol Theatre by director Yevhen Tyshchuk, who, through the prism of theatre, chose to tell the world the truth about Russia's war crimes while preserving the memory of the Mariupol victims. The play has gained wide recognition not only in Ukraine but also abroad. The production has already successfully toured full halls in Poland, Germany and the UK. International audiences have praised the production for its powerful emotional impact, while critics have emphasized the importance of this theatrical performance as a historical document, seeing in it an act of civic courage that allows the voices of war victims to be heard on the international stage.
